Today, MCM Executive Director, Moses Kaufa took the helm at the launch event of the Legal Media Handbook, an invaluable resource for journalists and those interested in understanding court processes and legal matters in Malawi. The handbook, developed by the Gender Justice Unit and partners, is designed to equip journalists with the knowledge and skills necessary to work collaboratively with the courts and legal experts, fostering a stronger and more transparent connection between the judicial system and the public.

In his address, Kaufa made an earnest plea to media professionals to remain committed to upholding the principles of truth and justice in their reporting. He also requested stakeholders for their support in reproducing and distributing the handbook to reach many media practitioners.

Kaufa also made a plea to lawyers to contribute to the cause of defending media freedom and freedom of expression by offering pro-bono legal assistance to journalists and media houses when the need arises. He also requested the Gender and Justice Unit to come forward to support and protect female journalists who he said face a lot of gender based violence including harassment when in line of duty and online.

Among other important subjects, the handbook delves into essential topics related to court reporting, including the structure and functions of the Malawian judicial system, principles and sources of Malawian law, the rights and responsibilities of journalists and media houses in accordance with the law, and, of course, the ethical and professional standards for legal reporting.
