The Media Council of Malawi (MCM) has reiterated its commitment to promoting professional standards ahead of next year’s General Elections.
MCM Executive Director, Mr. Kaufa, made the remarks on December 9, 2024, during the Annual Broadcasters’ Conference held in Lilongwe under the theme “Ethics in Action: Building trust in media ahead of Malawi’s 2025 electoral process”.
“The Council will be monitoring the conduct of the media prior to the elections to ensure adherence to professional standards,” said Kaufa.
He also emphasized that the Council has an in-house mechanism for resolving complaints against the media and encouraged the public to report any grievances they might have.
In his presentation on The Role of the Media During Elections, Kaufa highlighted the importance of fair, responsible, and transparent reporting on electoral processes.
He hailed the media in the country for its crucial role it plays in providing voters with essential information about candidates, policies, and the electoral process.
Kaufa, however, challenged the media to uphold its watchdog role by providing checks and balances on authorities and exposing any electoral malpractice.
The Annual Broadcasters’ Conference, which brought together broadcasting managers across the country, was organized by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), a long-time partner of the Council in promoting professionalism in the media sector in Malawi.
