The Media Council of Malawi conducted monitoring visits to community media outlets in the Southern Region.
These visits were intended to assess the progress made by media outlets following the capacity building trainings organized by the Council. It also sought to reinforce expectations regarding ethical conduct and operational standards during the electoral period, while promoting adherence to the Code of Ethics and Standards of practice in Journalism.
The Council visited Nyanthepa Community Radio Station and Gaka FM located in Nsanje.
Both institutions expressed interest to learn more about the operations and functions of the Media Council of Malawi and how best to discharge their duties during the election period.
MCM Executive Director Moses Kaufa urged them to uphold the professional code of conduct and ensure all information is thoroughly verified before publication to prevent the spread of misinformation during the election period. He also cautioned them against accepting money or other incentives from politicians, warning that such actions could compromise their journalistic integrity.

Kaufa also advised them to familiarize themselves with key legal frameworks, including the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections Act of 2023, the Malawi Electoral Commission Act, and the Media Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
“if they understand the laws, they will be able to explain the requirements of the elections and also what the community, all the citizens of Malawi are expected to do with regards to the elections, so understanding legal frameworks is very key for journalists.”
The Executive Director also encouraged both institutions to adopt a business oriented mindset. He urged them to work collaboratively in developing clear business and resources mobilization strategies to ensure their stations’ sustainability.
Nyanthepa Radio Station Manager Jipson Banda reaffirmed the station’s commitment to upholding ethical standards and pledged continued collaboration with MCM. Meanwhile, Gaka FM Station Manager Emmanuel Alufazema commended MCM for the visit and encouraged them to continue such engagements, noting that they help improve the station’s operations

This initiative is part of a UNESCO funded project under the IPDC, aimed at strengthening the capacity of community media houses for sustainable operations.
